PRE-GROUPING
STYLE WELL TYPE
These
kits are based on the hand-pushed "balanced table" design
of well turntable, built by Cowans & Sheldon of
Carlisle, and used by all of the British railway companies
from pre-grouping days until well into the 1930's when
they were largely replaced by the powered versions.
However, many examples of this type of turntable survived
into BR days at the smaller depots.
Three
kits are available, to build the 42/50 foot (12,8/15,2
metre), the 60 foot (18,3metre) and 70 foot (21,3 metre)
versions. The smaller sizes will accommodate most of
the 0-6-0 tender loco classes, whilst the larger sizes
will be required to turn 4-6-0 , 4-6-2 and some 4-4-0
classes. Note that 60 and 70 foot turntables were often
installed even though their diameter far exceeded the
wheelbase of the largest locos to be turned. This was
due to the fact that it would have been necessary to
position certain locomotives several feet off-centre
in order to achieve perfect balance.
